Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a binding element holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
