The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
