Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the platform has removed violative content and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of users, populated with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.

Within moments of joining one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
