The Princess of Wales's Annual Festive Carol Concert Spotlights Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.
The large audience will enjoy a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The focus of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Music and Opportunity
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the charity, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."
This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
