Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
